About This Service

This program leverages the brain’s neuroplastic abilities to strengthen and improve the use of your child’s hemiplegic arm. Grounded in evidence based practices (from the leading researchers and studies (early intervention multimodal- APPLES, Hoare, Gordon bimanual, Taub and de Luca CIMT), therapy is tailored to meet your child’s unique needs and delivered by our experienced team in a fun, play based environment.

The program consists of:

  • 5 sessions per week over 3–4 weeks.
  • A structured, individualised plan focusing on repetition and skill development.

What to Expect

Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT)

During CIMT, your child’s dominant arm is placed in a cast to encourage use of the hemiplegic arm. This approach provides the opportunity for repetitive practice of unimanual movements and actions, promoting neuroplastic changes and reducing secondary musculoskeletal impairments.

CIMT is structured to:

  • Strengthen motor function in the hemiplegic arm.
  • Drive changes in brain activity to support new movement patterns.
  • Encourage spontaneous, purposeful use of the hemiplegic side.

Bimanual Therapy

Bimanual therapy helps children develop the skills needed for two handed tasks by encouraging specific actions and behaviors through repetitive, goal oriented play activities. This method emphasises:

  • Learning to use the hemiplegic hand in combination with the dominant hand.
  • Mastering coordinated movements in real world, two handed tasks.
  • Building confidence in bimanual play and daily activities.

Our Approach

All therapy sessions incorporate principles of motor learning and neuroplasticity, ensuring your child experiences a structured, supportive and motivational environment.

Key elements include:

  • Play based activities tailored to your child’s goals and preferences.
  • Adjustments to the environment and tasks to optimise engagement and challenge.
  • Expert use of feedback and practice techniques to maximise progress.

In addition to your child’s therapy, parents will learn evidence based techniques as part of the Transfer Package, one of the three core principles of CIMT.

This ensures parents gain the confidence and skills needed to continue therapy at home, extending the benefits of the intensive program into everyday life. Our team will work with you to build your expertise, so you can actively support your child’s ongoing development and progress long after the program ends.
