About This Service

Expert assessments using the Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE) and Hand Assessment for Infants (HAI) to identify potential neurological concerns and support your child’s development.

At Helping Hemi Hands, we understand how worrying it can be when your baby’s development doesn’t seem to align with milestones, especially after a challenging birth, preterm delivery, or time in neonatal care. Our early detection service offers comprehensive assessments to identify any potential neurological concerns and equip you with strategies to support your baby’s development.

We use two specially designed, evidence based tools:

1. Hammersmith Infant Neurological Examination (HINE):

Developed by Dr. Lilly Dubowitz and Professor Victor Dubowitz, the HINE is a standardised neurological assessment for infants aged 3 to 24 months. This simple yet scorable examination assesses cranial nerves, posture, movements, tone, and reflexes.

Why it matters:  The HINE helps identify children with neurological brain injury such as CP and an asymmetry score greater than 5 on the HINE is particularly helpful in identifying infants with a high probability of hemiplegic (unilateral) cerebral palsy.

2. Hand Assessment for Infants (HAI):

Designed for infants aged 3 to 12 months, the HAI evaluates hand function by measuring the degree and quality of goal directed actions performed with each hand individually and both hands together.

Why it matters

The HAI provides scores for each hand, illustrating potential asymmetry and overall upper limb ability. It is especially useful in identifying infants with early signs of unilateral cerebral palsy and has been validated with age norm references.

What You’ll Gain:

  • A detailed assessment report from a specialist, offering clarity and helping your GP or paediatrician refer you to appropriate services more efficiently.
  • Insights into your baby’s unique needs and developmental goals.
  • Practical guidance on handling, play strategies and developmental positioning to support your baby’s growth and neuroplasticity during this critical period.
  • MCIMT and Bimanual therapy advice if appropriate to your child's needs.

Why Early Detection Matters:

Early intervention is key to leveraging the brain’s neuroplasticity and preventing secondary changes. With timely support, you can create the best possible foundation for your child’s ongoing development and functional skills. If your child does have a diagnosis of hemiplegia we are trained in the APPLEs early intervention program.
